In this first instalment of the Padel Smash Series I will be talking about a shot of particular intrigue—the "Vibora". An aggressive overhead smash named after the Spanish word for "snake", the Vibora offers players a potent weapon on the padel court. In this article, we will dissect the Vibora, examining its mechanics, strategies, and how it may be different to other padel smashes.

This past weekend UK Padel hosted the 2nd round of the UK Padel Youth Padel Tour bringing together enthusiastic juniors with varying levels of padel experience. It was a day filled with fun, laughter, and a healthy dose of competition. Again, we used the Americano format so that players could share the court with new peers and make lasting padel friendships all while trying to test their skills and figure their new opponents out.

A warm thank you goes out to the parents, some for the second time, to bring their kids down to play. We got a sense that after watching their youngsters play, the adults were itching to get on court as well! Thank you to the new faces who entered, it’s so great to see the sport reach more people. Padel has a unique ability to capture the hearts of those who try it, and this event proved just that.

For those whose children have yet to set foot on a padel court, I extend a challenge. Padel is a sport that offers enjoyment to individuals of all skill levels and sporting backgrounds. I can almost guarantee that they will have a great time on the court. Let's get more kids involved in this wonderful sport, and who knows, we might discover the next padel sensation!

So, mark your calendars because the next round of UK Padel Youth Padel Tour is on October 29th. It could be your first time playing in one of our tournaments or it could be your third, wither way we guarantee some high quality padel and new padel friends. Let’s keep the momentum going, gather your friends, and let's make each tournament an unforgettable experience on the padel court! You can find the tournament on the LTA website or reach out to us here at UK Padel and we will get you sorted.

The scene is set. You have the net. Your opponent’s drop their racquet way below the ball. You know what’s coming next. You drop back and prepare the racquet high above your head. But now what to do? Where to hit? At the feet, the corner, the cage? What type of spin should I give the ball? Kick? Slice? Should I drop all the way back and let it bounce off the back glass? All valid points. And in this series of Coaches Corner, I will be going through each smash and try to make your decision making easier and make you more effective once you’ve prepared beneath the ball.

But first, I wanted to briefly chat about the rain policy at the club until (fingers crossed) we get the court covers approved.

Finally, summer decided to show up in the UK! I hope you have made the most of it this week, getting as much padel in as possible! With more warm weather forecast for the weekend, make sure you jump on the UK PADEL App and book your court or join an Open Match.

As some of us learned last week, several padel racquets come with a "summer" version featuring foam with adjusted density for temperatures that exceed 25 degrees Celsius. (Reminding us that true summer weather has only just arrived in the UK.) This prompts an intriguing question - if racquets respond differently in the heat, what about everything else on the padel court?

Not only racquets but the balls are also affected by rising temperatures. They are made of rubber and pressurized, and as  you may remember from science class, an increase in temperature means an increase in pressure. This increased pressure leads to higher bounces off the ground and more rebound off your racquet. When in two minds about using the back glass or not, in warm weather, it's probably safe to let it rebound off the glass, confident that it will rebound back to you.

Additionally: with the same level of power, your shot will rebound off the glass at a greater distance in the warmer weather, potentially making it easier for opponents to defend. In such situations, opting for a softer hit can be a great tactical move, allowing for better control over the ball's trajectory and ultimately executing a more effective shot.

Playing padel in the sun demands extra attention to your body's needs. Sunscreen is a non-negotiable essential, ensuring you're protected from harmful UV rays. Additionally, hydration is paramount. Consider adding electrolyte tabs to your water for peak performance - a small tweak that can make a world of difference and something I do myself. Carrying a towel in your bag proves invaluable for drying your grip and other sweaty areas, maintaining a firm hold on your racquet. Opt for breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics that allow your skin to breathe and effectively wick away sweat. These minor details can collectively elevate your game and keep you in top form.

We want to encourage you, our padel members, to share your own tips and tricks for thriving in the summer sun. Comment on social media, shoot us an email and we’ll even watch our busy WhatsApp groups! What are your go-to strategies for staying cool on the court? Do you have any favourite brands or specific attire that you swear by? Leave your comments and let's deal with playing padel in the hottest of weather!

With these tips in mind, you're poised to make the most of this long-awaited summer on the padel court. Slather on that sunscreen, hydrate effectively, and equip will see you thriving on the courts this weekend!

Tactics are the beating heart of padel. Making the right shot selection and being in the correct position every time will be the difference between victory and defeat on the court. Decisions are made in the heat of the moment and can shape the entire game's trajectory. Today, we're diving into an aspect of padel tactics that I see on a daily basis and one that can be your secret weapon: the strategic interplay between shot selection and your contact point with the ball.

Hey UK Padel Crew,

What a weekend it was for our men's padel teams! Let's dive into a recap of the action-packed weekend on the padel courts.

Saturday Showdown

The stage was set on a wet and windy Saturday morning at Holmer Green Padel as our A team faced off against the reigning National League Champions, David Lloyd Bushey. The conditions played to our advantage as they are used to playing indoor padel, but both teams adapted well to the conditions. The sun made a timely appearance and the matches that followed were nothing short of epic, with both teams showcasing exceptional padel skills. Each point was fiercely contested, and the matches lived up to the high expectations.

As the dust settled, the score stood at a tense 2-2, reflecting the hard-fought nature of the clashes. What's even more impressive is that half of the matches concluded with heart-stopping super tiebreakers, a testament to the level of skill and competition on both sides.

While our A team was locked in fierce competition, our B team was making waves of their own against Broxbourne. The clinched three out of four matches in an impressive win. Yet, beyond the victory, the standout moment was the tenacity shown in their lone defeat. An extended super tiebreaker that ended 14-16 epitomized the determination our players bring to every point.

Undeterred by the previous day’s showdown, our A team returned to the courts on Sunday to face MVP Padel. The energy and enthusiasm remained high, and once again, the matches were intense, with neither team giving an inch. As the final points were played, the result echoed the previous day – a hard-fought 2-2 draw. Once more, super tiebreakers played a pivotal role in determining the outcomes, adding to the drama and excitement.

Looking Ahead: Mixed League Match and Beyond

The excitement continues! As the week unfolds, we're gearing up for more thrilling matches. Our next challenge is a mixed league match against the prestigious Chelsea Harbour Club, promising yet another round of high quality padel action against one of the country's top clubs.

For those with a competitive edge, our Box Leagues are just around the corner. Regardless of your skill level, these leagues offer the perfect stage to display your competitive padel spirit and take your game to new heights.

And don't forget to keep an eye on the UK Padel App for updates on upcoming club matches and coaching sessions. Whether you're a seasoned player or embarking on your padel journey, there's always something to learn, improve, and enjoy.

Until next time, stay tuned for more updates. Keep those padel’s swinging and embrace the thrill of the game!

Among the various techniques in a padel player's arsenal, topspin stands out as a skill that can give you an edge over your opponents. But some coaches tell you to never hit tospin and others say it is okay – who do you listen to? In my experience coaching padel, players with a tennis background use way too much topspin and at the wrong times within the point. And squash players don’t seem to use topspin at all, relying in their slice heavy background. In this Coaches Corner blog post, we'll explore the ins and outs of topspin in padel and provide you with valuable insights on how to incorporate this tactical element into your gameplay.

The return is the first shot played by the receiving team after the serve. It not only starts the point but also influences the dynamics and rhythm of the game. A well-executed return puts your opponents under pressure, enabling you to seize control of the rally right from the start. Moreover, a good return can help neutralize your opponents' serving advantage and give you and your partner an opportunity to take the offensive. In this blog post, I will share my personal experience with the padel return, highlighting the initial hurdles I faced and the strategies I developed to improve my return game.

The Initial Hurdles

As a tennis player making the switch to padel, the serve-return dynamics can feel vastly different. In tennis, we are accustomed to returning faster serves. When we get a second serve, we often view it as an opportunity to take control of the point. In padel, the serve is typically slower and closer to a second serve return in tennis. The mistake I made when first coming to padel was to try and attack both first and second padel serves.

Embrace Precision Over Power

One of the most significant adjustments I had to make was to shift my focus from sheer power to precision in my padel returns. Instead of trying to hit the ball with force, I learned the importance of placing the ball precisely in specific areas of the court, particularly low over the net and at my opponent's feet.

Targeting the Opponent's Feet

Targeting the opponent's feet with the return can be highly effective in padel. By hitting the ball low and forcing the opponent to play a difficult volley, you put them under pressure and limit their options for an aggressive response. This approach often leads to weaker shots or defensive returns, setting up a better opportunity for your team to seize control of the point.

Mixing It Up with Lobs

Incorporating lobs into your padel return repertoire can be a game-changer. Unlike tennis, where lobs are often seen as defensive shots, in padel, well-executed lobs can become offensive weapons. By surprising your opponents with occasional lobs, you keep them guessing and disrupt their positioning, making it harder for them to anticipate your next move.

Practice and Adaptation

Perfecting the padel return requires regular practice and a willingness to adapt your game. As you become more familiar with the padel court dimensions and its unique playing style, you'll start recognizing patterns and developing a better understanding of when to attack and when to play a safer return.

In conclusion, the padel return is not just a simple shot; it's a strategic move that can set the tone for the entire rally. By focusing on precision, targeting the opponent's feet, incorporating lobs, and committing to continuous improvement, you can elevate your padel return game and take control of the court. So, step onto the padel court with confidence, embrace the challenge, and unleash the power of your return to make a lasting impact on your padel journey.

We have a great deal for our existing members! You will receive £20 court credit to any current member who signs up any new member (monthly or annual), so please do get your friends and family on court!  T&Cs apply.

Remember, padel is a sport that brings joy, camaraderie, and endless opportunities for improvement. Embrace the learning process, have fun, and watch your return game become a force to be reckoned with! Happy padel playing!
